FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ledwidge Lumber Forced to Layoff 33% of Staff October 22, 2007 – Twenty-seven Ledwidge Lumber employees were notified on Thursday that they will be laid off for an indefinite period of time. Current market conditions including a slow housing market in the U.S. and a high Canadian dollar are reasons for the layoff. Already running on a smaller than normal employee base, Ledwidge Lumber is forced to layoff 33% of their current staff as part of a cost-reducing plan. A number of strategies are being used to curve costs so the company can continue producing lumber and survive current market conditions. “An ad-hoc committee was formed and a number of scenarios were discussed. At this time, a restructuring of the company and a temporary layoff is considered the best solution,” says President and General Manager Douglas Ledwidge. Ledwidge Lumber is a family-owned company in Enfield that employs three generations of the Ledwidge family and plans to celebrate 65 years of business next year. Ledwidge Lumber is one of the larger sawmills in the Province of Nova Scotia, producing stud lumber for the housing market. Seventy-five per cent of Ledwidge Lumber’s product is exported to the U.S.
